Rajiv Ranjan Mishra – Former Director General of National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG)
An alumni of IIT Kanpur, Rajiv Ranjan Mishra joint the Indian Administrative Service in 1987. He has served as the Director General of National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) in the rank of Secretary to Government of India and spearheaded Namami Gange programme from 2018 till Dec 2021.
Mr. Rajiv’s contribution towards Ganga rejenuvation are path breaking, manifold and sustained over a very long period of time. He has also contributed to shaping of government policy for Ganga rejenuvation in such an impactful manner that it has also inspired rejenuvation efforts for other rivers.
His most recent effort in this direction is a book titled ‘Ganga: Reimagining, Rejuvenating, Reconnecting’, co-authored by him. The book gives an account by a change maker, of the enormity of challenge, institutional processes and reforms which led to momentum and impact on river health and how it could be sustained.
He has been given The Annual Research Award of Prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee for Ganga Rejuvenation. He was also given lifetime achievement award for his contribution to water sector by Water Digest.
Under his able leadership NMCG has also got several international and national recognition including Public Agency of the Year Award (Distinction) by Global Water Intelligence of London, Best River cleaning initiative by India Today group, FICCI water Awards, International award for application of GIS etc.
He continues to be a river champion and sustainability warrior even after his superannuation sharing his experience and advising several institutions like National Institute of Urban Affairs as Chief Advisor, GIZ India (SGR) as Sr. Advisor, and Mentor to Jal leadership program of Rishihood University etc. He is also Professor of Practice in Department of Management Studies in prestigious IIT, Roorkee.
